THE MONGOL RALLY 2011
What happens when you channel your inner James Bond, mix it up with a little bit of MacGyver, add in a pinch of Jason Bourne and perhaps just a splash of A-Team-style Mr. T? You get the Mongol Rally, that’s what- and yes, it’s back for 2011 and we’re beyond excited. Led by a team of organizers known as The Adventurists, this is truly a rally and a half, and absolutely not for the faint of heart. Which is what makes it so good.

WHAT IS IT?
It’s an opportunity to live out your most adventure-filled dreams. A trans-continental race jam packed with hijinx, shenanigans, tricks, the occasional massive scare, and yes, an almost-hourly adrenalin rush.

WHERE DOES IT GO?
If you dare to embark upon the route, you’ll be traveling halfway around the earth, through a string of locales most people haven’t even heard of. The only thing you’ll really know is that you’ll start in Europe and end up in Mongolia, traveling up to 10,000 miles in between. Past teams have been taken through the Arctic Circle, and as far south as Afghanistan. Four weeks, several teams, 100% adventure.

WHAT ARE THE RULES?
Serious degree of difficulty here. First, zero support. Should something go wrong, should you break down in the desert with only a piece of chewing gum to hold your car hood closed, so be it. Better get your thumb prepared to start hitching a ride with a caravan. Second, your vehicle has to be tiny, and according to Mongolian authority rule, must be younger than a 10 year old shoe. No car older than 2001 allowed. Third- your engine’s got to be smaller than a liter. That’s correct- absolutely no engine larger than a liter. Or face a fine. As they say, this is an adventure, not a nursery school class. Using a massively large, well-equipped off road vehicle wouldn’t be fair, or half as fun now, would it?

WHY THE HECK WOULD YOU DO THIS?
Well, because in the end, it’s for charity. The Mongol Rally has raised up to a quarter of a million US Dollars in the past and they hope to smash that record in 2011. Each team entering must raise a minimum of £1000 GBP just to enter and that’s just usually a starting point. It’s not the easiest way to raise money for a good cause, but certainly one of the most intriguing.

WHAT THE EXPLORATEUR IS DOING
If you are reading this and thinking about entering, let us know immediately! We’ll pledge a portion of your registration / entrance fee and for any Explorateur readers who actually do complete the rally, we’ll provide you with a luxurious resort stay for 2 in the Caribbean to chill out and recuperate in an ultra-blissful atmosphere. http://mongolrally.theadventurists.com/index.php

Good luck. May the best crazy-daring-bold-team-in-a-car-with-no-oomph-but-tons-of-spirit WIN!

EVADE HOTELS- Spain
We’re pretty obsessed with Catalonia (or Catalunya depending on who you’re speaking to)... we can’t quite put our finger on exactly why. Perhaps it’s the fierce pride and independent strength of the people, or the multitude of converging landscapes from mountains to beaches, or the intoxicating wine and food, or maybe just the old-fashioned fun of decoding the language especially if you’re a Spanish-speaker. Whatever it is, it continues to lure us back. It’s easy to get drawn in by Barcelona’s wonders, but on your next visit, consider moving a bit into the interior and discovering two unique boutique hotels within the EVADE portfolio that both define a true Catalunyan experience.

Serious wine enthusiast? Well then you’ll find a home in Can Bonsastre Wine Resort- famous for their Winestyle and location in a most perfect vineyard paradise. Your only job here is to allow them to help you lavish in the true essence of wine culture, which is easy in this 16-th century country estate-turned-luxe-boutique, the near-perfect weather, a restaurant devoted to overwhelming the five senses, and wine activities a-plenty. http://www.canbonastre.com/

TREE OF LIFE RESORT & SPA- Jaipur, India
In so many cultures, the Tree of Life is an icon signifying eternity, beauty and peace, which is clearly the inspiration for Jaipur’s newest luxury resort bearing the same name. This property is a palace of serenity, designed to allow guests to celebrate the most lavish, and also the most elemental things in life.

You’ll spend your time here in ways you probably never imagined. You might choose to ride in a 1965 Jeep once owned by a Maharaja over to a modest village for an afternoon of tea with locals. You could visit a local school and even teach for part of the day. You could opt for yoga class, a city tour, or a day by the pool. You can even ride a beautifully decorated elephant and then dine with him by your side afterwards. We especially like their The Chef In You experience which begins with a visit to the local market in an auto-rickshaw with the chef, buying all of the essentials and returning to the kitchen for a delightful afternoon of hands-on Indian cooking lessons followed by the gorgeous meal you’ve helped create.

And then ,you’ll retire to your luxe villa lined with intricate glasswork, water gardens and the most spectacular private couples’ spa space complete with hand-crafted foot baths, two treatment beds, a Jacuzzi, outdoor shower and dramatic views.

Why Jaipur? A hundred reasons to visit this “Pink City”, not the least of which are it’s rich traditions, cultural festivals, fascinating palaces, bustling bazaars for great shopping, vibrant colors, scenic monuments and streets full of energy. Which is why Tree of Life Resort & Spa is such a perfect complement- serenity at the opposite side of town. www.treeofliferesorts.com

THE VILLA BOOK
Our favorite thing about a villa stay is…well, EVERYTHING. The privacy, the exclusivity, the exotic nature, the tailor-made amenities, the extra space, the fact that you get to live like a rock star, if only for a brief time. Shall we go on? Now for the one not-so-fun part…the process- with thousands of websites out there it’s challenging to determine what’s true, what’s reliable, and where to even begin. Which is why we love Villa Book. They couldn’t make it any easier, truly. Even with over 1,000 properties in their portfolio worldwide, they somehow know each one intimately and always seem to magically select the villas that are perfectly suited to you.

Their team has over 26 years of experience, and the tremendous relationships they’ve built with the property owners and local agents means they can arrange just about anything for you, down to the finest, smallest detail. Need a private full time chef? Not a problem. Cooking lessons? You got it. A bedroom with a balcony overlooking the Grand Canal in Venice? Of course. Private yacht charter for the day? Absolutely, with pleasure. If you know what you’re looking for- great, simply tell them and they’ll get it arranged. If you don’t have the slightest clue what you’re looking for, also great- simply submit some information about what you’re thinking and they’ll come back to you with some phenomenal suggestions.

Plus, the deals are amazing! If you find yourself being able to travel VERY last minute and have just discovered you owe yourself that summer vacation you’ve been putting off, consider Villa Giacaranda in Positano at 50% off plus daily breakfast and daily maid service from 28 Aug – 04 Sep. CASA COLOMBO- Sri Lanka
Thirsty for an immersion into an entirely quixotic locale? Sri Lanka may just need to be added to your “to-travel-to” list. Take a bit of British, a dab of Dutch, a morsel of Malay, a pinch of Portuguese, an inkling of Indian and you’ve got a brilliant blend of culture and charm. Colombo is the island’s largest city and commercial capital, and a great place to start your Sri Lankan stay before trekking outward to the island’s beautiful beaches.

Casa Colombo ranks high on our list of most surprising hidden gems. It’s one of the most remarkable contemporary hotels, entirely reinterpreted by a talented Sri Lankan designer named Lalin Jinasena, who has often been credited with renewing the traditional Singhalese design and architecture and whose name ranks among the greatest in the international design scene. And it shows… just 12 Retro-chic suites carved out of a 200 year-old Moorish mansion built by one of the wealthiest Indian trading families way back when. No expense was spared, from the intricate mosaic floors, handcarved arches, stylish gold ceilings, handpainted frescoes, and unique custom-designed uber-mod furniture (which by the way can all be purchased and carefully shipped home for you).

These aren’t your ordinary suites at all. Touches like intelligent lightning, intuitive technology, super duper king size bed (yes, 7 x 7’!) and even a secret twist in the shower. You’ll have to find that one out yourself.

Need something? No problem- that’s what your Casa Domo is there for, designed to look after you personally and even more carefully than the regular old Butler, who’s there to come to you rather than wait to be asked to take care of something. They’ll meet you at the airport to transport you in style via grand vintage car to the hotel, glass of bubbly in your hand all the way along. A hot lounge, trendy restaurant, signature spa treatments, and even a pink pool with 8 glass sun beds complete with music and phone just complete this full circle of underlying sensuality that surrounds Casa Colombo. http://www.casacolombo.com/

The bold beauty of Bolivia captivates all who visit this far-too-underrated land, and a trek to this region pulls travellers into a seemingly alternate universe, where one can bike across salt flats, trek to an island laden with petrified cactus, watch pink flamingos dance in a lake, spelunk and discover ancient graves, and visit a volcano while you’re at it as well. SHOMPOLE- Great Rift Valley, Kenya
There are a few ways to tackle Kenya and we recommend integrating all of them for the ideal experience. Traditional Tribal via a visit with the Maasai, Rustic Rural in the form of an amazing safari expedition, and then Contemporary Conceptual (yes indeed) and the finest example of this unique new wave of Kenyan-chic is known as Shompole.

One of the most acclaimed lodges in Kenya, this unusually unique property sits discreetly in a private conservancy, and has been designed to harness the colors, textures and emotions of its natural surroundings. An understated yet overwhelmingly beautiful blend of white quartz, polished wood, pale thatch, smooth stone and a touch of African bush feel peacefully surround guests who wish to let the land lead them while on such a mystifying holiday.

Here, breakfast is most beautifully enjoyed on the plains or under the shade of a fig tree, dinner is taken by candlelight under the stars, and your most challenging choices each day revolve around whether to embark on a heart-stopping game drive, lazily drift down the river in a canoe, or indulge in a holistic “African Body Works” day of wellness designed to unravel the soul, de-stress, and enhance the full richness of life. Can you Kenya? Yeah, we think you can. www.shompole.com

PALAZZO MAGNANO FERONI- Florence, Italy
Pack your cloak, polish your crown, shine your scepter and get ready to walk proud, with your shoulders held back, master of all you survey. Or, skip these steps and check directly into Palazzo Magnani Feroni if you’re just dying to know what it must have felt like to live like true European nobility. This regal hideaway has served as a luxurious retreat for members of the aristocracy since the 1500’s, and now it awaits your arrival as well- ready to treat you in the same spectacular noble fashion.
Attention to details here- marvelous. Attention to the most minute details- meticulous. Service that makes you feel as though you're a member of elite high society- ridiculous (in an amazing way of course). Breakfast the Palazzo manner means dining in an extravagant hall graced by an incredibly ornate Murano crystal chandelier, evening cocktails here are meant to be sipped in romantically illuminated galleries once home to the most elegant of parties thrown in spectacular, indulgent fashion by the Feroni marquises.

We recommend the Feroni Deluxe Suite for the best possible experience. EL VINTEN – Baradero, Argentina
A wise man once said “If you can spend a perfectly useless afternoon in a perfectly useless manner, you have learned how to live.” We agree, and if you do too, we suggest spending a few of those afternoons at El Vinten. This is a blissful hideaway just 90 miles outside of Buenos Aires, making it the perfect complement to a few days spent in the bustling city.

The drive is easy, and it’s beautiful, and once you arrive at this gorgeous exclusive retreat set high upon a cliff, you just somehow feel that you’re actually thousands of miles from just about anywhere. Two impossibly cozy suites and one separate guest house warmly await your arrival, all adorned with massive windows and lovely verandahs….all the better to be able to enjoy the fascinating river and wild island-filled panorama.

Here, the pace of life is lento….. to indulge in the full El Vinten lifestyle, one must settle down. Turn off the laptop and turn on the iPod as you laze in the shade under the gorgeous trees that line the pool area, trade the Blackberry for the grapes you’ll learn about that help make the fantastic local wines, and forget about the diet. The deliciously fresh vegetables, gorgeously grilled meat & fish and delightful dulces are meant to be enjoyed in spades here. And, if you’re itching to be a bit active, you’ve got boating, waterskiing, horseback riding, and they’ll even organize a friendly polo match with local neighbors if you so desire. The perfect way to complete your Argentina jaunt. www.elvinten.com.ar

VILLAS VALRICHE- Mauritius
A discreet retreat offering a world of space, peace and privacy…if that’s on your agenda then Mauritius should be as well. A tiny, unspoilt island 1500 miles due east off the African coast, measuring just under 800 sq. miles in size but packing an enormous proposition of paradise. Why are people mad about Mauritius? Perhaps it’s the island’s magnetic mystique, its 100 miles of glimmering beaches, gentle welcoming people, sense of security, enchanting blend of French, English, Creole and Indian culture, energetic outdoor pursuits, natural wonders from waterfalls to wildlife, or just the plain fact that it literally has near-perfect sunny weather all year round. Plus, the shopping is legendary. What better to complete the circle than to acquire your own private villa, if only for a few days and we love Villas Valriche.

This is a complex of 22 absolutely luxurious villas ranging from 2-4 bedrooms, all with private verandas, ultra high-tech technology, concierge service, private infinity pool, uninterrupted ocean views and the most elegant interior design.

What we find quite intriguing here is their take on Energy Cuisine…inspired by the concept of their Seven Colours Spa, they’ve carefully created a vibrant menu with selections symbolizing the 7 Chakras, which enable you to continue your treatment far after it ends with an innovative culinary experience for your senses. And, if you don’t wish to leave your villa (and seriously, why would you considering how off-the-hook they are), you’ve got access to a private chef who will prepare meals any way you wish, a butler at your command who can deliver anything you like, and in-villa spa treatments on demand. And, if you feel like exploring, not to worry- 9 restaurants, an 18-hole golf course, 2 spas, a fitness center and a nature reserve should keep you pretty busy. They’ve even got a mountaintop lodge retreat outfitted with powerful telescopes that allow guests to learn about the stars and constellations at night.

A villa stay here means serenity, privacy, seclusion and privilege, which is really what Mauritius is all about so consider this option when considering an Indian Ocean getaway. The extra breathing room of a private complete home is priceless on this slice of paradise…

LEDGOWAN LODGE- The Highlands, Scotland
Scotland has this thing about it, a quirky, fascinating, interesting allure that draws travellers in by playing a bit on their senses of both humor and wonder. If you believe in the Loch Ness Monster (like us, we wholeheartedly admit we’ve searched), if there’s just something about that lovely accent, if you’ve ever wondered what haggis tastes like, and if you’re an old-school Mike Myers fan, then surely you’ve had this hankering to visit for a while.

To experience the most visually stunning areas of Scotland is to visit the highlands...or in this case, travel about an hour northwest of Inverness until you reach the charming little village of Achnasheen and you’ll encounter what a proper highland country house is meant to be at the
Ledgowan Lodge Hotel. Standing over a century old and positively bursting with charm and character, this grand former hunting lodge still holds on to many original features like cozy drawing rooms adorned with gold and rich wood panelling, chandlers dripping with glinting crystal, real log fires, candelabras, and the traditional (and unrivalled) ambiance which makes for an unforgettable experience.
