LOCH NESS LODGE, Inverness, Scotland
We admit it, we believe in the good old fashioned urban myths...from Yetis to spirits to of course, Nessie. In fact, we proudly admit we've spent hours upon hours gazing over Loch Ness in the hopes of catching a glimpse (no comment on the outcome but there's always hope). Here's something you don't have to seek too hard to find, a most charming lakeside hotel with a terrific deal. The Loch Ness Lodge embodies all that a jaunt to the Scottish Highlands should be- a naturally stunning atmosphere, gracious hospitality, inspiring views and just a dash of mystery in the mix. You've got your choice of seven elegant, individually designed rooms which stun at first sight, hues range from rich and daring to subtle and soothing, providing little havens dotted along the famed shores. And if the vistas weren't enough, they also have a surprisingly long list of available spa treatments for such a diminuative treasure. Between the easy chairs, the drawing room and superbly-comfortable beds, there is no shortage of perfect spots to settle yourself for long days breathing in the fresh air and taking in the dramatic panorama. We suggest you bring your binoculars too...JUST in case...that's all we're sayin'.

Meet the Antarctic Dream, the valiant vessel that dares to transport you through the whitecapped, unrelenting waters surrounding the Great White Continent. SHANGHAI MANSION, BANGKOK

Planning a trip to Asia but just can't quite seem to find either enough time or budget to do everything you want to? Here's a modified thought-consider the Shanghai Mansion Bangkok when heading to Thailand. This fusion of a boutique hotel whose Chinoise Chic atmosphere sends you straight back to Shanghai circa 1935, where elegance, romance and glamour ruled, and exquisite antiques and brilliantly colored silk furnishings were the standard. 55 gorgeous rooms, all named after traditional Chinese flowers are endless exploding fusions of colors- vibrant fuschia, shimmering turquoise, embroidered emerald and crimson blending harmoniously with the more modern fixtures including cable TV, wi-fi, mini bar, all the things you say you don't need but we know you really do. STEENBERG HOTEL, SOUTH AFRICA
What do you call a hotel that looks more picturesque than the most beautiful painting, anticipates your needs and requests before you even do, and makes you feel as though you're living in a dream? The Steenberg, that's what you call it. This delightful slice of heaven in the heart of the Constantia wine valley in South Africa overwhelmes you upon arrival, with just the greenery and brilliance of their perfectly manicured grounds. As you amble slowly down the pathways, you discover vineyards, a golf course, friendly faces walking the grounds, and the most charming milk-white Cape Colonial-style structures whose exteriors have been painstakingly and carefully maintained in original fashion dating back to the 1600's. The Steenberg's serene atmosphere makes it impossible not to feel as though you are truly relaxed, with time on your hands. Time to walk the grounds, time to indulge in the luxurious spa or enjoy a complimentary wine tasting, time to laze by the quizzically modern yet comfortable pool area- and the supremely helpful staff make you feel completely at home. What's most special about this property are their 3 Heritage Suites- incredibly grand, individually styled villa homes that you can opt for. Ideal for a small group or those that just want to feel completely secluded, these suites come with the services of a butler, have impossibly equipped kitchens, spacious rooms and their own unique touches. Our choice is the Khoi Khoi suite, where you'll find things like a stream-like fountain running through your room, or a plasma TV that doubles as a mirror and curious yet cool artwork. RUMILOMA LODGE- QUITO, ECUADOR

You may have heard of climbing a volcano, driving up the side of a volcano, or even watching one erupt... but have you ever considered sleeping on one? Odd thought, we know...but trust us, after you see the luxurious mountain oasis known as Rumiloma Lodge, you'll wonder why you never thought of it before. Miles in the sky above bustling Quito, lies the most perfect haven, complete with one of the best restaurants in the area serving Ecuadorian-influenced fusion cuisine and enclosed in windows proffering the most exquisite vistas. Step up a few stairs (after you get acclimatized of course), and you'll find just a tiny handful of the most enchanting suites gracing the hillside, which are decorated in such a way that you have to imagine that somehow, a magic wand must have been used in the process. Traditional wood carved furniture, brilliantly colored fabrics, mosaic-lined sinks, curiously styled copper pot-like bathtubs, and absolutely NO TVs. Unique antiques seem to jump out at you to say a friendly hello at every corner and turn and the staff is as present as you wish them to be, and as discreet and quiet as you wish them to be as well. The charming couple that owns Rumiloma maintain a solid commitment to sustainable tourism and community outreach. Rest assured, most of the food, flora & fauna, and even decor for the rooms are purchased in local villages and measures to protect clean water and the flourishing surrounding forests are basic and standard at this fluid and unique operation. At 600 square feet apiece, it's tempting to get lost in the coziness of the suites above the clouds, and to feel miles from anywhere in the world.

EXPLORE HIMALAYA- Nepal, Tibet, Bhutan, India

OK, so the Himalayas aren't exactly the first thing that comes to mind when the average traveler is planning a vacation. But, if you're reading this, chances are you're pretty far from the average traveler, and you have a sense of adventure and discovery that melds perfectly with this type of destination and all it encompasses. And, Explore Himalaya Travel & Adventure Company is the best partner to take you there becuase they make it all so easy to understand and book.

Their team is phenomenal, from the sales consultants in office that make constructing even the most complicated itineraries seem simple and effortless, to the highly experienced Sherpa climbers and guides who have all successfully led numerous treks of all sizes and lengths. We find there is no company more capable or trustworthy in the region. The Himalayan region is a candy land for all things adventurous and beyond your imagination. These 4 countries are filled with exquisite speciments of architecture, intriguing culture and natural beauty, and their guides are beautifully schooled in history and ripe with local knowledge. To visit these lands is to take a giant step back in time, and a giant leap away from any lifestyle or culture you have ever known, and it's fantastic. They can even help you organize a volunteer tour with local schools in Nepal if you're so inclined.

So, if you have ever dreamt of experiencing Mt. Everest (let's face it, even if it's just making it to Base Camp it's still pretty darn impressive!), they can make it happen. Even if you have a dream to scale up to 25,000 feet, they can work with you to make that happen as well. The training part though for months in advance, for that our friends you're on your own.

MONTAUK YACHT CLUB- THE HAMPTONS
There's perhaps no better defining moment marking the change of seasons than when Northeasterners start to talk about heading out to the beach. It's then when one knows that gray skies, snowy days and dark mornings are a thing of the past if only for a few months' time, and it's indeed time for summer fun. But you're all grown up now, gone are the days of the shared shore houses, the week-long rentals in a bungalow the size of your living room, you're past all that- what to do? Easy...step it up a notch and check out the famed Montauk Yacht Club Resort, the most fabulous escape in the Hamptons. This resort is a landmark, with a long list of alum by the names of Vanderbilt & Astor, even Ephron (yes, Zac! OMG!).

Today, fresh off of a $6 million revitalization, it looks amazing. Guest rooms are thoughtfully done up in a relaxed, chic nautical New England style decor, with an array of modern gadgets and amenities. And for those seeking a bit more space and privacy, the bungalows and villas are ideal. It's got everything you could ever want in an exlcusive local summer hideaway- tennis, fitness center, private beach, 2 pools, a marina, watersports and of course no resort of this calibre could be complete without a spa. SPA MYC on property is not to be missed, and their customizable treatment programs are just what you need after a long day of lounging, fishing, reading, or doing whatever makes you happy. And the dining...incredible.

The best part is that it's easily accessible- a few hours by car from most points in the tri-state area, a simple train or Jitney ride for New Yorkers, or just a short hop from New England making this an even more attractive jaunt. You'll find the midweek days much more subdued than the weekends so consider a stay during the week. Take a few days off, you deserve it and saying "I'm heading out to the Hamptons" just never gets old.

KAYA MAWA, MALAWI
Too often these days, a relatively obscure destination's name arises in the media, usually attached to some sort of bad news or tales of strife. In the case of Malawi, we felt it was our duty to remind all of our loyal readers that this amazing country is so much more than just a backdrop within a celebrity adoption scandal. It is, in fact, one of the world's most stunningly, naturally beautiful settings whose people are among the most genuine and heartwarming on the planet. Sincerely. One place in particular that is as full of goodness as it is loveliness is Kaya Mawa. Translated, it means "Maybe Tomorrow", which becomes an obvious theme upon arrival and once you breathe in the fresh air and the vibe. You'll find Kaya Mawa on Likoma Island, just a short flight hop from the main airport in capital city Lilongwe. And once you find it, you'll likely not want to leave. Strewn with just a handful of individual chalets overlooking water so clear you can see to the bottom, it is a true escape from the rest of the world, from modern life, and into a space where you'll discover the true meaning of kindness in the people, the true meaning of beauty by the surroundings, and the soul of Malawi in its purest form. Perhaps even more magnificent than the setting is the good Kaya Mawa does for the local community. They are involved in 10 amazing socially responsible projects that benefit the community in a variety of ways, whether it be building wells for clean water, or supporting the local village schools, or even launching sustainable farming and food programs. There is perhaps no greater sense of goodness and community elsewhere.

Malawi is a great excursion option when visiting South Africa. South African Airways and Air Malawi offer convenient service from Johannesburg.

ELQUI DOMOS, CHILE
Did you ever have that feeling where you just need a lifestyle change? Most of us trod through, other brave souls venture out, simply say "I'm done", and head forward to launch their dream. Such is the case with the owners of Elqui Domos, one of the world's only true astronomy-focused hotels, where stargazing from one's bed is simply a standard amenity. Set in the heart of the Elqui Valley, which offers possibly the most clarified view of the constellations in the world, this series of 7 domes all have 2 floors, terraces, a living room, a bedroom, and oh yeah- a detachable roof. Comes in very handy considering you also get your very own telescope too, plus all the astronomy guidebooks plus personally guided viewings by the resident experts, the owners themselves. This is a true dream come true for the proprietors who wish to share their passion for astronomy with each and every one of their esteemed guests. Blend this with a city stopover in Santiago and a jaunt through the winelands and you've got the makings of an inspired and authentic Chilean journey.

We didn't believe it either when we first crossed paths with this curious-sounding company, whose name actually just spells out exactly what it is. HILLSIDE SU- ANTALYA, TURKEY
In a city so rich with old-world customs and ancient structures, things like disco mirror-balls and sushi-bars don't readily come to mind, but that's the beauty of this very stark contrast known as the Hillside Su. A most unique property for this area, you can't help but be attracted to what they dub as "the most daring, inviting, and appealing" scene around, and with that you're temporarily suspended in a playfully fun state. Upon entering, you're overtaken by a pleasantly hypnotic vibe and you almost wonder if you've stumbled into a hip lounge instead of your hotel. You visit your room and become so entranced by the interactive lighting that changes color that you wonder if you had too much champagne. You indulge in the Maxi-Bar in your room and wonder is this not your own fridge or pantry? You take a stroll downstairs, take in the amazing view of the Med, and enjoy a fabulously unique handmade sushi roll and you wonder, am I sure I'm in Turkey? Yes indeed, this hotel is a shining example of how the amazingly hip can peacefully coexist side by side with the stunningly ancient.

THE LONDON NYC

It began with a bulldog...strange as it may seem, this is what caught our eye the first time we took notice of this absolute gem of a property set in the heart of midtown Manhattan. The bulldog draws you in, makes you smile, and the rest is history. Cut to the arrival, you're met on the doorstep by beautifully dressed attendants and treated like royalty from the point of check-in. The accommodations (all suites) carry a bit of a mod decor with touches like a massive two-headed shower, way-too-comfy bed, and those views of New York spanning Times Square all the way to Central Park and beyond that you can't quite believe are real (but they are, and yours, temporarily). They seem to have thought of everything...the desks are actually big enough to work on with room to spare, there is a separate fridge from the mini bar, the aubergine-colored freeform-shaped sofa in your living room is actually comfortable and large enough to lounge on, and there is SPACE (yes, ample space, in a NY hotel room, we promise). The service is spot-on, the staff seems to know what you want even before you do, and the dining experiences at both of Gordon Ramsay's on site restaurants, Maze and London, are as flawless as you might imagine. A real find, and once you find it, you'll find it hard to stay anywhere else.

PROPELLER ISLAND HOTEL- BERLIN, GERMANY
To all of our readers who ever wanted to sleep in a barn, lie hanging on suspended bed, sit in a coffin, or be surrounded by furniture that's hanging from the ceiling? To all of our readers that fantasized when they were a child about spending a day in Willy Wonka's factory....we have your Golden Ticket. Introducing Propeller Island City Lodge. We almost don't quite know what to call it, or how to explain it but suffice it to say, it is a most curious complex filled with various types of themed rooms. Aside from the more morbid areas, there's also a bunch of really interesting, intriguing rooms that we're sure you haven't seen before and probably will never see again. A Topsy Turvy room where everything is slanted, the Freedom suite which is fashioned like a prison cell, the Space Cube room with its ice-blue mystical lighting, or the Two Lions suite where your beds are of course set inside steel cages. Is it odd? Yes. Is it funky? Absolutely. Is it amazing and a definite must-see whilst in Berlin? Positively. Bring your camera and your sense of humor (and wonder).

HOTEL DE GLACE, QUEBEC, CANADA

Every year around this time, the Explorateur gets a bit weepy, sort of like the way one feels at the end of the old Frosty the Snowman cartoon with Burl Ives, when "that time comes". For, it won't be long now before one of our favorite haunts disappears, never to be recreated the same way again. If you've never been to the Hotel de Glace, you're in for a real treat. It's a hotel constructed entirely of phenomenally crafted, sculptured sheets of ice. Impossible you say? Well, we thought so too at first but such a place really does exist. Each room within this magical wonderland of a complex are full of expressive innovation- with touches like Hockey-themed suites this year, a spectacular purple-lighting-infused Gothic style bar, the famous Ice Bar where you can "cool off" with your favorite libation, and even a Gaudi-inspired suite with creative carvings in the artist's quirky style etched into the icy walls. Perhaps the greatest creation this year is the fabulous toboggan-like Grand Slide, running twists and curves throughout the property and delivering child-like euphoria to one and all. The last day of the season is 29 Mar...so if you want to catch it you'll have to hurry. But fear not! If you miss it, don't worry- an entirely new , even more innovative reincarnation will appear in January 2010. Just like a snowflake, no two versions of this unique property are ever exactly alike...but that's the fun of it!

Obvious tip: Bring MANY layers of clothing...although the temps inside are warmer than one might expect, it's still pretty chilly!
