The best hotel amenity i've ever seen

Focused. Head down, looking at nothing else but my laptop for hours, the streaming TV news on the wall next to me providing just enough ambient background noise to keep me in my work zone. I noticed nothing around me, as what happens when you've been out on appointments all day, only to return to find a mountain of what's managed to pile up in a few hours with an even shorter timeframe to get it all done. Type, respond, complete reports- repeat. For hours, I sat like this recently in every business traveler's hotel-based sanctuary, the club lounge. This time, it was the Intercontinental Sao Paulo, which happens to be one of my favorite business hotels EVER, even before this scene occurred. More on that in a bit.

The ultra bubbly, super helpful Brazilian concierge had been looking after me so well- ensuring I had everything I needed, telling me I was working too hard with a fun smile and after a few hours, she had completely had it with me and implored me to stop, for just a minute. I looked up, and saw she had a man with her that she would like to introduce me to, again with that wry fun smile and before I got any wrong ideas, she told me he was a magician. What? OK, I'll play along. She told me I was sitting there for too long and I needed a break, which I did, so he told me he'd like to do some tricks for me. Again, OK- let's see what he's got. This guy treated me to some of the most delightful, mind boggling things I've seen- wallet on fire, stole (and of course replaced) my wedding rings, did some absolutely crazy things with multiplying spongeballs and just made me laugh. I felt like a wide-eyed child watching him with wonder and it was just so what I needed.

To break out of a frozen work state, to sit and be forced to relax, and realize at that moment that it's actually alright if I don't answer an email until the next morning. We all need a bit of that from time to time.  I've never quite experienced an amenity in a hotel like this (and I've seen A LOT) and I am not sure I ever will again, until of course I return there the next time. That's just something that I have come to expect from a hotel like this- that has really cornered the market on slick, yet friendly, discreet yet proactive service with flair. They have a system here that, for me on my many stays, has been flawless and I commend them from the top management down. But the magician, that was just, well....the best.

Knowing Norway

Norway is about as picture perfect as it gets, and in recent months it's surely moved up to the top of the family vacation bucket list, especially if you have a child who's seen the movie FROZEN (who hasn't!)  It's a nearly impossible task to accurately describe the natural beauty of the majestic fjords, the rich verdant landscape, the blinding white snowcapped peaks, the charismatic villages, stark urban design, and fresh air so crisp you want to spend hours just breathing it in.   Certainly not for the faint of heart when budget is concerned, but once you go you completely agree it was worth the spend.

Get in the know with Norway, we've got the key to this ice palace. We begin in Oslo with a tour of the city that opens you up to a better understanding of the rich Norwegian heritage, moving on to a flight up to the Arctic Circle for an exquisite view of the Northern Lights while overnighting in a traditional small lodge where you can snowmobile and dog sled til your heart's content. Meet and interact with the Sami tribal people, see how they maintain their semi-nomadic lifestyles and ancient rituals for an experience you'll never forget.

Immersive Italy... on Sale

EAT. TRAVEL. LOVE. If those 3 words make you as happy as they make me, then you've got to take a look at our lovely I Love Italy journey that takes you through a beautiful cross section of this gorgeous country.

Begin in Rome where you'll have an in-depth view of the city's best attractions including the Trevi Fountain, Piazza Navona, Pantheon and more with a supremely savvy, local guide. Play chef for a day in the countryside outside of Rome with an authentic cooking lesson, during which you'll prepare delectable dishes with fresh vegetables you'll pick yourself ( and yes, of course, you'll get to eat it!) before sipping your way through a dessert course infusing some of Italy's top wines in a charming village.  Next up, Naples where you'll first get an immersive tour with a local guide that knows all the best haunts, followed by a full day in Capri sauntering through it's pedestrian streets lined with designer boutiques and elegant cafes along with spending some time with a local guide who will help you navigate this curious island.

After Naples, you'll find yourself in Florence where you'll take on the city by bicycle, with a guide who will take you off the usual tourist paths too tiny to reach by bus or car! Cycle through the narrow streets and get an up close and personal view of the city's most amazing monuments, stopping for a gelato or two along the way. Spend time in Tuscany, where you'll head out and shop for groceries with a chef in a fabulous local market before heading back and preparing a gorgeous meal side by side with the master. Wander through the Winelands the next day in Chianti and spend time inSan Gimignano, a fascinating Medieval jewel, as you spend the day sampling the region's best wines, olive oils and balsamic vinegars. Finally, you'll reach Venice where an entertaining local guide will help you navigate on foot (and by water) where you'll have an opportunity for a splendid gondola ride and water taxi transfer back to the airport to catch your flight home.

Awesomely Aussie

Serious sunshine, awesome adventure, personable people, fab food and world-class wines. Just a few of the thousands of reasons to love Australia. For me, this is one of the most fun destinations I get to work with when crafting an itinerary simply because there are so many directions in which to go.

Here's an idea that will fuel your appetite for adventure and sheer bliss...begin with an active stay at one of Australia's most luxe wilderness camps in the heart of the desert, bringing you a feeling of solitude and spirituality where you can trek into the gorge for sundowner drinks against the sunset, bask in the magnitude of Ayers Rock or spelunk with an expert who will decipher the magnificent stories of cave paintings you'll find along the walls. Travel to the world-famous Barossa Valley and stay in a lavish vineyard retreat and share a drink with the master vintners.

Explore into the depths of the Outback and link up with a sheep farmer who will show you his interesting way of life and help you appreciate the wildlife native to this region in a 4x4.  Have a pilot pick you up and fly over the enchanting landscapes and rock formations, lakes and gorges and soak up a rarely seen birds-eye view of the land. Trek forests the next day and have your innkeeper pack a picnic lunch to enjoy on the hill before heading to Adelaide to get into slow-travel mode aboard  luxe rail journey toward Sydney for an urban style exploration before trekking on a self-drive out to the Bamurru Plain for a different style of wildlife viewing via 4xr or even an airboat in this curious ecosystem while you look out for crocs, wallabies, Dingos, wild pigs and more.

Japan, you can

OK, I've said it before and I'll say it again. There are just a few stark realities that a traveler to Japan just has to deal with. Yes, it actually CAN cost upwards of US $300 for a taxi ride from the airport to a downtown hotel. Yes, there is a correct way and a wrong way to enter and exit the subway, and making a telephone call from a public phone is challenging even for the tech-savviest of people. But, there are fewer places more chaotically beautiful and visually stimulating than Japan and we have some fabulous options for you to consider when you're ready to visit. Consider the following:

  • Private visit of a silk-dyeing workshop and hand dyeing experience
  • Traditional dedication in a Shinto Shrine
  • Gold leaf craft experience
  • Sake brewery visit & tasting
  • Japanese calligraphy lesson
  • Kimono dressing
  • ZEN Experience in a historical temple

Door #1 or Door #2

I have always had such a fascination with beautiful doors. The bigger, the more ornate and the stronger looking the better.  Walking through an old palace recently, I got to thinking about how this relates to travel which is, I believe, the ultimate door. The door to a new perspective, a new experience, a refreshing life changing endeavour, a path to relaxation, or even just a bit of a break from the every day.

I got to thinking, which door do I prefer? Door #1 that's closed, where I have no idea what awaits on the other side or Door # 2, where I can partially see what's in front with a pretty good preview of what's to come.

I'm a blend of the two, with a slant towards Door #1.  I have a type-A personality, I'm a bit of a control freak (ok a LOT more than a bit) that serves me and my clients well in business and keeps my life organized. But, I can't deny I need that fascination of the Door # 1 , that unexpected rush that comes with delving into something new, outside of my comfort zone.

The Ultimate Frontier

I have never had buyer's remorse when travel's been concerned. Not once have I ever looked back and said "Wow, that wasn't worth it". Not even when conditions were cruel, when planes were delayed, when hotels cancelled my reservation with no explanation, when cars broke down or tours didn't run. Not once did I not learn a lesson or come out of an experience more enriched and educated about the world.

YEars ago I was at another crossroads when I had an opportunity to get to Antarctica on a cruise, I didn't really have the money to spare but somehow I made it work and its something that lives in my mind so vividly it's difficult to even explain.

There's something about getting so remote, so off the grid...it feels like a gigantic privilege almost. There's no currency here, no real official time zone, no official language, just life at it's purest. Water, animals, and a few short term visitors all existing in peaceful harmony.

World Cup report from the ground

We love it when our fellow Explorateurs report from the field!  Here's reader Ross Hull's take on his experience at the World Cup. Who are YOU rooting for?   And thanks Ross!

I traveled to Salvador da Bahia, Brazil's third most populous city and center of its Afro-Caribbean heritage, two weeks ago to see the World Cup in person. Being a... meticulous planner, I procured two tickets to see teams F2 v. F3 in Salvador's recently-renovated Arena Fonte Nova - a beautiful structure only one half mile from the city's stunning Pelourinho neighborhood in November of 2013.

After the lottery balls fell (maybe with some help for certain teams (cough... cough - Argentina and Brazil) according to some), it turned out that F2 and F3 were Bosnia-Herzegovina and Iran, respectively. Not soccer powerhouses per se, but... I was scheduled to see the World Cup in person... in Brazil.

I arrived in Brazil with little trepidation regarding the social unrest being advertised on the major media outlets. I'd been to Brazil for Carnival previously and felt confident in the security surrounding the event. Brazil has too much at stake - especially with Rio de Janeiro, and a few other select Brazilian cities, hosting 2016's Summer Olympics. My confidence was supported once I touched down. From the airports (São Paulo's Guarulhos to Salvador's Deputado Luís Eduardo Magalhães) to the streets of Salvador's neighborhoods, everything was well signed, well organized, and well secured on the ground. The crowd for the game I attended was certainly manageable because of the teams involved, but the experience was still electric, yet courteous and safe. As for the game, it was a better than expected contest with Bosnia-Herzegovina defeating Iran 3-1 - the country's first ever World Cup victory. How awesome for the citizens of a small war-torn country... and myself.

As for Brazil's team, I unfortunately didn't get to attend one of their matches during my trip. However, my good friend Tony and I did watch the entertaining Chile v. Brazil match at a bar in the gritty Rio Vermelho neighborhood. The crowd of approximately fifty fans went crazy after every home goal and when Brazil won the match 3-2 - only after Chile's last penalty kick hit the goalpost - the whole neighborhood went wild. As an American I've never seen anything like it. During the match and for several hours afterwards, the entire neighborhood, and I'm assuming the entire city, shut down. Besides for bars with large-screen televisions, it seemed like all shops closed and all traffic stopped.

It was only my first World Cup, but I highly recommend you experience the World Cup the next time it comes to a soccer-crazed nation like Brazil. Cheers to the World Cup, FIFA (generally), Brazil, and all of the wonderful Brasileiros I met. Muito Obrigado!
